How to Multiply and Divide Fractions and Mixed Numbers

Multiplying
Multiply numerators together and denominators together, then simplify. You can cancel common factors before multiplying to keep numbers small.
2/3 × 3/4
- Decimal: 0.5
Step-by-step working 4 steps
- 1Write the problem
2/3 × 3/4
Both numbers are already fractions.
- 2Multiply across
(2 × 3) / (3 × 4) = 6/12
Multiply the numerators together and the denominators together.
- 3Simplify
6/12 ÷ 6/6 = 1/2
The greatest common factor of 6 and 12 is 6; divide both by it.
- 4Decimal and percent
1/2 ≈ 0.5 = 50%
Dividing
Keep the first fraction, change ÷ to ×, flip the second. Only the divisor is flipped.
1/2 ÷ 3/4
- Decimal: 0.666667
Step-by-step working 5 steps
- 1Write the problem
1/2 ÷ 3/4
Both numbers are already fractions.
- 2Flip the second fraction
3/4 → 4/3
Dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal.
- 3Multiply across
(1 × 4) / (2 × 3) = 4/6
Multiply numerators together and denominators together.
- 4Simplify
4/6 ÷ 2/2 = 2/3
The greatest common factor of 4 and 6 is 2; divide both by it.
- 5Decimal and percent
2/3 ≈ 0.666667 = 66.6667%
Mixed numbers
Convert to improper fractions first: 2 1/2 = 5/2 and 1 1/5 = 6/5, so 2 1/2 × 1 1/5 = 3.
2 1/2 × 1 1/5
- Decimal: 3
Step-by-step working 4 steps
- 1Write the problem
5/2 × 6/5
Convert mixed numbers and decimals to fractions first: 2 1/2 = 5/2; 1 1/5 = 6/5.
- 2Multiply across
(5 × 6) / (2 × 5) = 30/10
Multiply the numerators together and the denominators together.
- 3Simplify
30/10 ÷ 10/10 = 3
The greatest common factor of 30 and 10 is 10; divide both by it.
- 4Decimal and percent
3 ≈ 3 = 300%
Common errors
- Multiplying whole parts and fraction parts separately.
- Flipping the wrong fraction when dividing.
- Forgetting to simplify.
Practise in the fraction calculator, and review adding in how to add fractions.
