Discount Calculator
Enter the original price and the discount. You can add a second discount and sales tax. The calculator shows the amount saved, the price you pay, and why two discounts do not simply add.
- Sale price before tax: 60.00
Step-by-step working 2 steps
- 1First discount
80 × 25% = 20 80 − 20 = 60
Discount amount = price × percent ÷ 100, then subtract it.
- 2Round to cents
Final price 60.00, you save 20.00 (25% of the original)
How to use the discount calculator
- Enter the original price and the percent off.
- Add an extra discount or sales tax if they apply.
- Read what you pay and what you save.
- Open the steps to check each stage.
Discount formulas
Saving = price × discount ÷ 100 Sale price = price − saving = price × (1 − discount ÷ 100) Two discounts: price × (1 − d₁) × (1 − d₂)
Tax is normally added after the discount.
Worked examples
Each example below is generated by the same calculator you used above, so the working always matches the answer.
25% off 80
- Sale price before tax: 60.00
Step-by-step working 2 steps
- 1First discount
80 × 25% = 20 80 − 20 = 60
Discount amount = price × percent ÷ 100, then subtract it.
- 2Round to cents
Final price 60.00, you save 20.00 (25% of the original)
20% then 10% off 100
- Sale price before tax: 72.00
Step-by-step working 3 steps
- 1First discount
100 × 20% = 20 100 − 20 = 80
Discount amount = price × percent ÷ 100, then subtract it.
- 2Extra discount (applied to the reduced price)
80 × 10% = 8 80 − 8 = 72
Stacked discounts multiply; they do not simply add. 20% then 10% is 28% off in total.
- 3Round to cents
Final price 72.00, you save 28.00 (28% of the original)
10% off 100 plus 8% tax
- Sale price before tax: 90.00
Step-by-step working 3 steps
- 1First discount
100 × 10% = 10 100 − 10 = 90
Discount amount = price × percent ÷ 100, then subtract it.
- 2Add sales tax
90 × 8% = 7.2 90 + 7.2 = 97.2
- 3Round to cents
Final price 97.20, you save 10.00 (10% of the original)
Common mistakes to avoid
Adding two discounts together
20% then 10% is not 30% off: the second discount applies to the already-reduced price.
Taxing the original price
Sales tax is usually charged on the discounted price.
Forgetting to subtract
The percent-of calculation gives the saving, not the price you pay.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find the original price from a sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). The percentage calculator’s “X is Y% of what?” mode does the same job.
Is the currency important?
No. The arithmetic is the same in any currency; results are rounded to two decimals.
