Fraction to Decimal Chart: 25 Common Fractions

Fraction to Decimal Chart: 25 Common Fractions — illustration
In short: To turn a fraction into a decimal, divide the top by the bottom: 3/8 = 0.375. 9 of the 25 fractions below repeat forever; the rest stop.

How to convert any fraction

Divide the numerator by the denominator. For 5/8 that is 5 ÷ 8 = 0.625. The fraction calculator also shows the decimal and percent for any answer.

5/8 as a decimal and percent
Answer5/8
  • Decimal: 0.625
Step-by-step working 6 steps
  1. 1
    Write the problem
    5/8 + 0

    Both numbers are already fractions.

  2. 2
    Find a common denominator
    LCM(8, 1) = 8

The least common multiple of 8 and 1 is 8, so use 8 as the denominator.

  3. 3
    Rewrite both fractions
    5×1/8×1 + 0×8/1×8 = 5/8 + 0/8

Multiply top and bottom of each fraction so the denominators match.

  4. 4
    Add the numerators
    5 + 0 = 5 → 5/8

    Keep the denominator unchanged.

  5. 5
    Simplify

5 and 8 share no common factor other than 1, so the fraction is already in lowest terms.

  6. 6
    Decimal and percent
    5/8 ≈ 0.625 = 62.5%

Spotting repeating decimals

Reduce the fraction first. If the denominator has no prime factors other than 2 and 5, the decimal stops. Any other prime factor (3, 7, 11 …) makes it repeat. That is why 1/8 and 1/20 stop but 1/3 and 1/7 do not.

  • 1/3 = 0.333… (the 3 repeats)
  • 1/7 = 0.142857… (a six-digit block repeats)
  • 1/6 = 0.1666… (only the 6 repeats)

Going the other way

To convert a decimal to a fraction, write it over a power of ten and simplify — see how to convert a decimal to a fraction.

Frequently asked questions

What is 1/3 as a decimal?

It is 0.333…, with the 3 repeating forever. As a percent it is 33.33…%.

Why do some fractions repeat?

Because the denominator contains a prime factor other than 2 or 5, which cannot divide a power of ten evenly.
