The three-step method

1. Write the percent over 100. 2. Remove any decimals by multiplying top and bottom by 10 (or 100). 3. Simplify the fraction by dividing by the greatest common factor.

Example: 62.5% = 62.5/100 = 625/1000 = 5/8.

62.5% as a fraction
Answer5/8
  • Decimal: 0.625
  • Check: 5 × 125 = 625 and 8 × 125 = 1000
Step-by-step working 3 steps
  1. 1
    Write the fraction
    625/1000
  2. 2
    Find the greatest common factor (Euclid’s algorithm)
    625 = 0 × 1000 + 625
    1000 = 1 × 625 + 375
    625 = 1 × 375 + 250
    375 = 1 × 250 + 125
    250 = 2 × 125 + 0

    Divide repeatedly, keeping the remainder, until the remainder is 0. The last non-zero remainder is the GCF: 125.

  3. 3
    Divide top and bottom by the GCF
    625 ÷ 125 = 5
    1000 ÷ 125 = 8
    → 5/8

Benchmarks worth memorising

  • 10% = 1/10, 20% = 1/5, 25% = 1/4, 50% = 1/2, 75% = 3/4
  • Eighths: 12.5%, 37.5%, 62.5%, 87.5%
  • Thirds: 33⅓% and 66⅔%

These let you do many percentage questions in your head. For worked methods see the percentage guide.
