Weighted Grade Calculator

Enter completed work as score/weight pairs (score out of 100, weight as a percent of the final grade), and optionally a target. The calculator shows your current grade and the average you need on what is left.

Example: 88/30 means a score of 88 worth 30% of the final grade
Try an example:
AnswerCurrent grade 86.57%
  • Weight still to come: 30%
  • Needed on the rest: 98.00%
Step-by-step working 3 steps
  1. 1
    Weighted points earned so far
    88 × 30% = 26.4 points
    92 × 20% = 18.4 points
    79 × 20% = 15.8 points
    Total = 60.6 of 70 possible

    Each score is multiplied by its weight (as a percent of the final grade).

  2. 2
    Current grade on the work done
    60.6 ÷ 70 × 100 = 86.571%
  3. 3
    Score needed on the remaining 30% to finish on 90%
    (90 − 60.6) ÷ 30% = 98

    Average this score across the remaining work.

How to use the weighted grade calculator

  1. List each finished item as score/weight.
  2. Enter the final grade you want.
  3. Read your current grade.
  4. See the average needed on the remaining weight.

Weighted grade

Points = score × weight ÷ 100
Current grade = points ÷ weight so far × 100
Needed = (target − points) ÷ remaining weight × 100

Weights should add up to 100% across the whole course.

Worked examples

Each example below is generated by the same calculator you used above, so the working always matches the answer.

88/30, 92/20, 79/20 → 90
AnswerCurrent grade 86.57%
  • Weight still to come: 30%
  • Needed on the rest: 98.00%
Step-by-step working 3 steps
  1. 1
    Weighted points earned so far
    88 × 30% = 26.4 points
    92 × 20% = 18.4 points
    79 × 20% = 15.8 points
    Total = 60.6 of 70 possible

    Each score is multiplied by its weight (as a percent of the final grade).

  2. 2
    Current grade on the work done
    60.6 ÷ 70 × 100 = 86.571%
  3. 3
    Score needed on the remaining 30% to finish on 90%
    (90 − 60.6) ÷ 30% = 98

    Average this score across the remaining work.

80/40, 90/20 → 85
AnswerCurrent grade 83.33%
  • Weight still to come: 40%
  • Needed on the rest: 87.50%
Step-by-step working 3 steps
  1. 1
    Weighted points earned so far
    80 × 40% = 32 points
    90 × 20% = 18 points
    Total = 50 of 60 possible

    Each score is multiplied by its weight (as a percent of the final grade).

  2. 2
    Current grade on the work done
    50 ÷ 60 × 100 = 83.333%
  3. 3
    Score needed on the remaining 40% to finish on 85%
    (85 − 50) ÷ 40% = 87.5

    Average this score across the remaining work.

95/50, 85/25 → 92
AnswerCurrent grade 91.67%
  • Weight still to come: 25%
  • Needed on the rest: 93.00%
Step-by-step working 3 steps
  1. 1
    Weighted points earned so far
    95 × 50% = 47.5 points
    85 × 25% = 21.25 points
    Total = 68.75 of 75 possible

    Each score is multiplied by its weight (as a percent of the final grade).

  2. 2
    Current grade on the work done
    68.75 ÷ 75 × 100 = 91.667%
  3. 3
    Score needed on the remaining 25% to finish on 92%
    (92 − 68.75) ÷ 25% = 93

    Average this score across the remaining work.

Common mistakes to avoid

Using raw points as weights

Weights are percentages of the final grade, not points possible.

Forgetting dropped scores

If your syllabus drops the lowest score, remove it first.

Expecting an unreachable target

If the needed score is above 100, the target needs extra credit.

Frequently asked questions

What if weights do not add to 100?

Completed weights may be less than 100; the rest is the work still to come. More than 100 is reported as an error.
